Our Recipient’s Story

In Her Own Words: Allissa's Story

Hi, I am Allissa Morgan, and I am a wife and mom to two amazing kids (13 and 11). I am also a 5th grade teacher and love spending every day at school with my amazing 5th grade kiddos. I love spending time watching my kids play sports, and when we have time my happy place is going to the mountains and lakes. I have participated in the Save Second Base pub crawl the last few years to support other women and never thought I would be on the other side of it.

In April, I found a lump in my breast and reached out to my doctor to get it checked out. I was put off until the end of June, and I felt that was not okay. I finally found a doctor who took me seriously and ordered a mammogram as soon as possible. I truly believe being proactive saved me tremendously and helped stop the rapid growth. I had a mammogram a year and a half ago that was completely normal, so I thought I would be fine. I was diagnosed with Stage 2 HER2 triple-positive grade 3 breast cancer. Within a few weeks, I started chemotherapy and will have a double mastectomy in November. My whole world got turned upside down, and it has been a tough battle. I am so fortunate to have an amazing group of friends and coworkers who have helped me get through this, and I know I will be okay. I feel fortunate to have been so proactive about my body and getting the best care I can. I want all women to do the same, and please do self-exams! Early detection saves lives!
